Babies of Busy Bees

1) Even the busiest of bees have babies. One just makes time for procreation.

2) Busy bees have babies later than not-so-busy bees and can be classified into few categories:

- busy bees that turn into mad mothers, stop working and start enjoying "this wonderful time in their lives", because after all "motherhood is so enriching"

- busy bees continue being busy bees, get a nanny for their babies and see them only on weekends (if the babies get lucky)

- busy bees that bring babies to work and expect everyone to admire them (them being busy bees and/or babies, depending on what kind of a bee you are observing)

3) Some busy bees bring their babies to parties or events which happens to help other bees in making conversation. Because behaving like babies are the cutest thing you have ever seen pleases every bee and makes a good ice-breaker.

4) If you for some insane reason don´t like babies and don´t find it ok to stare at them with that: "Awwwww!" expression at your face for ten minutes, get over yourself! Especially if you are a girl, in your twenties. You don´t wanna get stung..

Making friends

Being shy as I am, I have recently realized that I do not really choose who I am friends with as much as the people choose me. For some reason, it is not easy to make a decision that I am gonna be that certain person´s friend. And probably for the very same reason it is even more difficult to make it come true.
I am not by any means saying that I do not want to be friends with my friends. I am just saying that there is a specific pattern, in my case that is, in making friends and in being friendly.
In new situations and with a new group of people I tend to become a completely different person. I am nervous and I struggle to be extroverted, easily approachable, friendly, not-an-ice-queen. (With some people I maintain that pattern even when I have known them quite well for quite a while.) Even when I push myself to go out of my room/space/comfort zone and face the group of unknown strangers, I still feel like I am a little girl lost at sea of social interactions who has failed to learn the proper social protocols.
In a way when someone approaches me, in a majority of cases I am able to be at least friendly and I am likely to connect to that person on one level or the other. There are so many interesting and fascinating people out there...
The common factor is that they have to cross the room to talk to me and I very rarely cross the room to talk to them (I usually have to be drunk to do that). Do not get me wrong, I do not think that I am in any way better than other people or that they should make an effort to get to know me. It is just that I do not want to bother anyone or force them to say: "sure, join us," when they do not really want to say that.
I know that that is just me overthinking everything and that I should not just be bothered by all that.
I try.

A není asi horší situace, než když má člověk hrozný hlad a zároveň nemůže jíst a z představy jídla se mu dělá špatně.

Responsibility to use one´s time well

Lately, efficient use of my time seems to be on my mind a lot. There always seems to be a lack of time for the things that are essential for my life to move forward. Somehow every little waste of time combined with every interesting article read, video watched or game played happen to use up hours, days, even months and in effect prevent me from doing what I want.
I realize that I wrote that I am prevented from achieving my goals, when, really, it is my decision. I am the one who chooses what to do with my time. For one reason or another it is so easy to let time slip through one´s fingers and it is even easier to feel like it is beyond one´s control.

The weirdest paradox of it all is that when I am being paid to spend my time doing a job, however stupid a job, however miserable a salary, I would never be able to waste that time even in the slightest. But when it comes to using my own time wisely, I am at a loss. In a way, I am my own´s worst employee.

The Really Bad Kisser

Honestly, I used to think that they were an urban legend. Somehow, it did not seem likely that there could be people whose kiss would be disgusting. I mean, if they were attractive and have not just finished blue cheese garlic sandwich topped with a cigarette of course..
Well, I was wrong. As I discovered about a year and a half ago, there is at least one such specimen in the city of Prague. I still do not know how someone could lack such a simple basic instinct and/or brains to make it at least to the not-great-but-acceptable box. What confuses me even more, is that he thought he could ask me out again a year and a half later (is he not able to take a hint or is there an expiration date on hints?). Yes, he was unforgettable, but not in a good way. Is it possible, heaven forbid, that there are more guys like him?!

The Good Guy

One should never create checklists when it comes to the opposite sex. Sooner or later one is going to meet that perfect specimen that is all ticks and no crosses. Yet, when the heart does not skip a beat when you are together, 100% on the "perfect mate" test does not matter. Does the not wanting to date the good guy make me a girl with unrealistic expectations, a bitch or a naive romantic? At what age should a woman choose based on her mind and not her heart? ... were just some of the questions that popped up in my head as my heart kept beating regularly, when the perfect guy kissed me.

How many men does it take to find a soulmate?

I got bored and started counting.
There are 181 059 people between ages 20 and 29 in the city of Prague.
Of those 48.69% are men - 88 150.
Of those 86,3745% are Czechs = 76 139.
Of those approximately 92% are straight - 70 047.
Of those 1401 are slightly less intelligent, equally intelligent or more intelligent than I am (give or take).
If I take into account that he should probably be older and reduce this further to the 25-29 box, we are at 778 men.
Of those I probably know like a 100 and I have probably met like a 150 more, which would bring me to 528.
528 might seem like a high number, but that does not even include that he should not be a prick (we are probably down to like 50), he should not be a smoker, I guess he should not be plain ugly and he should definitely be single. In the end, there are probably 4 or 5 possible matches.

Which does not leave me with too many options:
1) find one of those 4 or 5 guys
2) I have already met the guy and I am just to ignorant to notice
3) I should become a lesbian
4) I should give up at least a few of the criteria

In the end, I am pretty sure that I will just do what I always do. Meet a guy, feel my brain melt, start ignoring all the red flags and get my heart broken:-)

For the record - I am not desperate, I am just trying to do anything but my thesis.

I hate being branded with the stamp of a receptionist.
Receptionists are presumably dumb, care only about their nails and hair and end up having an affair with one of their bosses or the whole office. I am not and I am not gonna be either of those, ever..
It is a part-time student job that I do to earn money. Rather than starve in an intellectual fashion, I prefer to work. To work at a nice office with nice people. I do a job that is challenging, at least for the first few months, even for a smart person. Because it is not about either brains or beauty, but about learning fast and fitting in, adapting to a new environment.
Honestly, I do not have any intention to make a career out of it. Why would I?...

What worries me is that I get the stamp, just as if I were a whore, and it might be hard to shake that one off. People that I know are mostly very intelligent, very smart and very judgmental. Once someone falls into the "what dumb people do" category, is there any getting out of it?
I never thought that there even were a dilemma, but lately I think: Is it better to be unemployed than have a job with a stigma?
And anyway, what should people like me do to earn a few bucks? Wash beakers in a lab for really few bucks?

Papírová kniha má něco do sebe a i když to "něco" neumím rozumem zdůvodnit, způsobuje to, že radši do kabelky dám jednu až tři knihy, než lehčí a menší Kindle.
Mobilní telefony a emaily mě začínají víc štvát, než mi pomáhat.
Paradoxně to mám potřebu sdělit internetovým blogem a místo zapsání do papírového deníčku... Asi jsem staromilec nedůsledný.

Pár mých osobních hejtů

- změny času ze zimního na letní a naopak.
- konspirační teorie.
- odcházející elektronika. S železnou pravidelností definitivně zkolabuje po 2 letech=kdy už neplatí záruka. I přes svou nenávist ke konspiračním teoriím na tuhle náhodu fakt nevěřím.
- slovo hejt. Stejně jako mítink, brífink, keš, zabukovat atd.
- nepodpis (Schwarzenberg), antilidi (Klaus)...
Popojedem.
Před pokladnami ok, tam to dává smysl.
- Klaus, Klausová, Jakl, Hájek, Bátora a další jim podobní.
- lidi komentující jiné lidi, kteří jsou stále v doslechu. Dělají to okolojedoucí cyklisti: "Viděls tu holku?" "No doufám, ta by za to stála!" Dělají to ženské jdoucí z nákupu: "Vidělas ty podpatky? To já bych na něčem tak vysokým nikdy chodit nemohla. Vždyť bych si zlámala nohy!" Dělají to moje kamarádky o kolemjdoucích: "Ježiši, vidělas ji?

Movies

When going to the movies with friends, I am sometimes deemed too critical. It seems like I want to have everything on a silver platter and if something ever so tiny is missing, I write the movie off.
But if one is to distinguish bad movies, those that are ok and those that are breathtakingly great, one needs to use the whole scale.
There are really bad movies, which I probably don´t need to describe in much detail. They can be either just bad or so bad that they are funny (nevertheless still bad).
Mostly I see movies that are ok - they might lack something in the storytelling, logic, performance of the actors, directorial skills; or they might use too many cliches, or maybe the music is too loud or it does not fit the scene etc.. It can be any number of things, but overall they are ok. It is nice to watch these and just relax and not overthink it. But when I am to state my opinion, I would not be able to say that such a movie was great... because it was not.
Then there are good movies, that just work. I go to a cinema to watch these. I might even connect to one of the characters and be afraid, when something bad is about to happen to them, or be happy for them, when they win a lottery or find that special someone for themselves. Sometimes there is a puzzle that I cannot help but try solving with the characters. After the movie is over, I might think about it for a while, there might be some questions that arise, that resonate in my mind for a couple of days. Sometimes I watch the movie again, maybe even more than once. But even when connected in some way, I am still just the viewer.
And then there are very rare movies that move me. I cease to be just a member of the audience. The movie touches something inside of me, speaks to me (as ridiculous as that sounds). It is not rational and I cannot even describe it right.
Last summer it was Single Man with Colin Firth, last night it was Shame with Michael Fassbender. I don´t know if these are objectively great movies. Maybe I just watched them at the right time and if I saw them at a different point in my life, they would not have the same effect. I even hesitate to watch them again, precisely because it was so strong an experience. If every movie was like that, I would not be able to go to a cinema as often as I do. They need to be the exception, not the rule. But on my personal scale, they are the only ones that deserve to be called great.

Mum, dad, I think I might be ... introverted.

What?! How is that possible? Did we not raise you well? Have we made a mistake somewhere?
... is what my parents could have said, had I come out of the closet. Well, they probably would not, since my mother is definitely introverted and my brother as well. The only really extroverted person in our family is my father.
But recently there has been a growing number of articles/lectures/books being written/given/published about introversion as a phenomenon that is looked down upon in our society, which made me think more about the issue.
Examples being here and here.
Not being sure where I belong on the extrovert-introvert spectrum I did the natural thing (being a woman and all..) - I googled a test. Well, to be precise I googled tests. Did a few with results raging from "neither introverted nor extroverted" (and thank you, I am not in the later half of my life, at least I hope so) too slightly introverted. (Interesting personality test is here, however extroversion/introversion is not the primary focus.)
The weirdest part for me is that I used to think that I was really extroverted until few years back. With age comes wisdom:-) so I started to realize that I often behave like a typical introvert and that my perception of myself is not correct. So why did I even assume that I was an extrovert in the first place?
Could it really be that the society perceives extroversion to be the normal thing and introversion as a weird deviation?
I don´t believe so. Growing up with extreme introverts my scale was probably a little off. Plus I always had trouble realizing how I am percieved by others and assumed that everyone just sees straight into my head, that there is no barrier between me and my thoughts and the outer world (weird and illogical as it may sound).
But when thinking about how workplaces are set up - yes, extroversion is definitely preferred. Not much that can be done about it, or is there a way?

Being Loyal

Being loyal is an admirable quality. But even more important than the loyalty itself, is who one is loyal to. We usually choose that person and they become our friends, our love and/or our family.
However a majority of people are employed in some company at one point of their life or the other. The question of loyalty becomes somewhat pressing - are you loyal to your department, your boss, your company or the people you would choose yourself?
Best case scenario - you respect your boss, you like your company and your colleagues become your friends. Then there is no reason to contemplate loyalty. But what if there is a conflict of sorts. You cannot bring yourself to respect a colleague, much less be loyal to them. All of that in a company that appreciates teamwork..
When someone asks for your honest opinion, should you be loyal to your colleague or yourself?
Sometimes the scene from IT Crowd pops into my head.

Be productive!

There is no known remedy for procrastination. Once the disease spreads, you are doomed. Or are you?
Lately a nice day filled with absolutely nothing has become a luxury I not only cannot afford, but also no longer desire. As weird as it may sound, by the end of each day I like to know that I have actually been productive, that I have done something fruitful with my time. It does not have to be anything other people would consider an accomplishment (like curing cancer or saving the third world). It is all the little tasks on one´s list. It feels so great to be able to cross some off, I may soon be able to even get high on that feeling.

Call me a prude, but I dont like it when I open my news feed and it includes (but thank god is not limited to) pictures of naked/semi naked women and/or of people having sex that my friends like/share/comment on or even upload. Or did I miss FB becoming a pornsite?

Cake or Salad?

When women choose between salad and cake, they usually want to have cake but often go with the salad instead. I don´t get it. Of course I like a good cake, who doesn´t.. But a fresh salad with some nice dressing (like vinaigrette) or even without it is the best thing ever. Why would anyone pick the sticky sugary dessert over a fresh crispy salad is beyond me..

Stats

When you find that there are statistics automatically calculated for a blog that you have been writing, you spend some time checking them out. So what I found today was that a keyword that apparently brought 1 person to this blog was "sex-děvky v kozačkách" (probably due to this post). I am really sorry to have been a disappointment:-)

Sorry, unavailable at the moment, please try again later.

I left the house with two things on my shopping list - 1) a hat because of the freezing temperatures and because of my general lack of hats, scarfs and gloves, and 2) eggs. I tried several stores, but as it seems, they are out of hats and winter accessories as such. The only hat they had in one of the stores was made of fake fur, which was a no-go. I found a few scarfs though, so maybe the headscarf idea deserves to be revisited, even though one is punished with weird are-you-a-terrorist-or-aren´t-you looks.
What puzzled me was that when I got to Tesco (at Anděl) they were out of eggs. Half the aisle with shelves completely empty.. Not the half-a-dozen carton, not the dozen carton, not ten-egg carton, no thirty-egg carton(I was desperate).. Reminded me of the stories about communism. How you got to a store and they just didn´t have this or they didn´t have that. It was impossible to buy the things you wanted because they were simply not available (if you were lucky, it wasn´t the toilet paper).
Growing up in a world when you can buy anything, anywhere, anytime, if or when you have the money, I am confused when something like this happens. When they don´t have winter clothes, because January and February are the months of sales and new collection includes only spring/summer clothes. Or when Tesco has trouble with their suppliers (probably to their understandable objections to the unfair terms that Tesco forces on them) and they just don´t deliver the goods. I know that these are all temporary "glitches" in the system, or I hope so, but I found today that the possibility of things being unavailable had not even occured to me. Should I be bothered by that?

The Shy Guy

I have got a lot of feedback on my "lack of connection with the person I was seeing", "my lack of openness about my feelings" and "my lack of directness", so I have decided that being a twenty-something no-longer-a-girl not-yet-a-woman, I should be able to work at that. To be more open and direct.
Which proved to be not so good an aproach.

Today I got asked for my phone number. By an interested guy´s colleague. I immediately said that I am in a relationship (by which I probably meant a really great relationship with the tv), which I was informed does not really matter. I was asked to think it over and tell the guy, when I make my mind up. Which was exactly what I did. The bad part is that the guy was so shy, he behaved like it did not concern him in any way and even though he never denied anything, he did not say much else either. So my attempt to be more direct and open has left me feeling like a complete idiot, talking to a guy, who was behaving like he was not even there.
Later that day, I explained the situation to my brother thinking he would empathise... with me. He looked at me, like I was nuts and explained - "you met a shy guy (stydlín in Czech). You never approach them directly." Now I looked like he was nuts - "so I should have pretended like nothing happened and leave the pink elephant in the room unspoken of? Is that what ´mature´ people do?" "Definitely! You need to ignore the question, if you dont want to say yes. And if you do, ask him out yourself."
So, I am puzzled. Despite of everyone telling me that I should be more direct and open and despite every guy-friend I have telling me that men can better handle an honest no rather than a non-specific maybe that is actually a no, I was still expected to behave like nothing happened?
Since my copy of Relationships for Dummies probably got lost in the mail, it should come as no wonder that I still dont have a clue as to what the right protocols are, when it comes to love and matters related..
