Visiting Istanbul - A Brief Overview of Turkish Delights
..that I have tried so far.
Lokum - the strange cube covered with powdered sugar that I received from a very kind stewardess on the plane turned out to surprise me. Basically it is a jelly with nuts in it. There are several variations including lokum with rose water, but I have not tried that one just yet.
Ayran - yogurt with cold water and salt. Does not sound great, but it is very refreshing and works well with almost every dish. My favourite drink of choice in Turkey.
Kebap - very well known to everyone, no need to describe further. Shockingly, I like kebap sold in Germany way more..
Kofte - meatballs that actually hold various shapes. Can be inside a sandwich or on a plate.
Balik ekmek - fish sandwich. We tried it in a ferry dock and it was quite good. Definitely can recommend.
Menemen - scrambled eggs with pepper and tomatoes. I loved that one! Best place to try: Breakfast Street. Not that there is officially anything named like that in Istanbul, the area around Sair Veysi Sokak hosts an amazing number of cafes offering delicious breakfast food. From what I hear, all day long!!!
Portakal suyu - fresh orange juice. Here in Istanbul it is sold on every corner by street vendors and is extremely cheap.
Turkish coffee - tried once in a naive hope that it will be better than what is sold in the Czech republic. Was mistaken, was even worse. I am plucking up courage to try it again.
Mahallebi - very nice rice pudding. I am generally not a big fan of puddings but I liked this one.
Elma cay - apple tea that for some reason is given to tourists sometimes when they ask for tea. It tastes like apple juice warmed to a tea temperature. Maybe Turks don't believe that their tea can be handled by anyone but them.
Patlican kebap - pieces of lamb grilled with aubergine. This is a delicious juicy dish that has little to do with doner kebap that everyone knows. Highly recommend it.
What remains to be tried (and I probably won't make it): Borek, manti, kumpir, pide, su boregi.
What I will definitely not try: Kokorec=seasoned grilled intestines
(Images are from google images results, I am very lazy today to be more thorough when citing. Will hopefully correct that sometime in the future.)
