Oh, Canada!

So I am currently visiting my boyfriend, who is doing a post-doc at University of Alberta. My first time over the Atlantic started not so great - I missed my connecting flight in Toronto and spent some quality time waiting for another flight (which was itself delayed by two hours).
BUT!
  • Canadians really are very friendly - I actually met my first friendly Canadian in Frankfurt in a queue for boarding. He was from province neighbouring Alerta and he was happy to give me tips on what to visit in the Rockies. He and his friend were apparently on their way from India. Friendly Canadian goes there quite often for surgery (hips and such). Yes, surgery. Medical tourism is apparently quite popular.
  • Pedestrians can feel safe - coming from the Czech republic I was very impressed, how Canadian drivers treat pedestrians. Not only do they give you way when you are just maybe considering crossing the road, but they also do it when you have a red light, they have the green light... and they don't give up, but wait for you to cross. I once played this game until I had the walk signal. They go out of their way to make sure you can cross the road any time you decide to. Czech drivers could be inspired at least a little bit.

  • Canadian Cities (Edmonton, Calgary) are a comfortable place to live, but not great for tourists - compared to Europe, and this is probably not going to shock anyone but me, Canadian cities are not worth to travel to for sightseeing. Mostly because they are so new that there is not much to see. Except new buildings and some semi-old.
  • Canadian Parks are amazing and Rockies are a must see! - nothing is more breathtaking than the Rocky Mountains suddenly appearing in the prairie and no picture can do it justice.
    Going from Calgary to Banff

The mountains are crazy beautiful and the Parks (Jasper, Banff, Yoho) are worth going to.
  • Measuring weight, height, width and others does not make any sense - Canadians are a weird hybrid between continental and British units. Sometimes metric system is used (distances, speed on roads...), but then you are caught off guard with height of a mountain in feet. Drinks are in ounces, but weight of food is in grams. Sometimes the same thing is one time in meters and another time in feet. Make a decision and stick to it! (and ideally don't make poor Europeans order 32 oz beer, when we just want to have a regular one)
